One of the longest rivers in the world, the Mississippi River in the United States, is drying up. Travelers were surprised by the appearance of the amazing base.
Launch CNN, Sunday (16/10/2022), a unique rock formation that is rarely seen can be accessed on foot. One of them is Tower Rock, a large island in the middle of the Mississippi River south of St. Louis.
Usually, the site is surrounded by water and can only be accessed by boat. But when a severe drought spread across the Midwest and sent river levels to record lows.
“The river has dropped low enough that you can walk to Tower Rock and not get your feet wet or muddy,” said Missouri resident Jeff Biget.
Photographs taken by Biget show people crossing a rocky riverbed to a tower-shaped island. Water levels are expected to continue to fall for at least the next two weeks.

Tower Rock can be reached on foot when the water level is below 1.5 feet in the Chester, Illinois river gauge, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation. The gauge went down to zero and showed no sign of a significant increase.
More than 55% of the contiguous area is experiencing drought, the most since April. There are more than 133 million people living in the drought-hit area, the largest population affected since 2016.
Severe droughts covered more than 70% of Arkansas and nearly 40% of Missouri, up from just 5% a month ago. Rainfall in several locations hit record lows in recent weeks, including Memphis, Fayetteville, Arkansas, and Springfield, Missouri.
More than 40 river gauges in the Mississippi River Valley report low water levels, according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The photo shows how the river is shrinking away from its banks. The normally mighty Mississippi River looks more like a trickle in some areas, with exposed areas of dry sand.
The low water level coincides with an important time, namely the transportation of crops from the heart of the country. The Army Corps of Engineers has dredged part of the river to keep traffic flowing.
Hundreds of barges and boats had been waiting in line, waiting for all to be safe to cross the very low river.
